Day 3:Mountain gorilla trek
Activity Note: The mountain gorilla trek typically lasts between 2 to 4 hours and involves walking through thick brush and rugged terrain at elevations between 7,000 and 9,000 feet. There may be stinging nettles and fire ants along the way, so be prepared.
Due to the risks of human interaction, gorilla contact is limited to one hour. Additionally, if the gorillas feel agitated, they may retreat before the hour is up. Travelers who show signs of illness may be refused entry by park authorities.
Breakfast: Start the day with a buffet-style breakfast at the lodge beginning at 6:00 AM.
Morning: Around 7:00 AM, we’ll drive to the National Park headquarters to meet our guides for the day. After completing necessary formalities, we’ll embark on an unforgettable trek to find the mountain gorillas. Tracking these massive primates through the light mountain forest on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes is a magical experience. You will get within meters of the gorillas and spend one hour with them—an experience you’ll never forget.
The trek can be strenuous, and we may be walking for up to 3 hours or more. It’s important to bring sturdy hiking boots, long trousers, gloves for protection from nettles, snacks, and sufficient water. The rainforest can be hot and humid during the day.
Lunch: After the trek, we’ll return to the lodge and enjoy lunch around 1:30 PM.
Afternoon: The afternoon is free for leisure activities. You can relax or explore the surroundings at your own pace.
Dinner: Dinner will be served at the lodge restaurant around 7:30 PM. Afterward, feel free to unwind at the bar or head to bed early to rest for tomorrow.
