4 Days Wildlife Safari, Gorilla and Golden Monkey Trek

Overview
Welcome to Rwanda, land of a thousand hills, a country that emerged from a devastating genocide a little more than two decades ago as one of Africa’s most magical travel destinations. Go for jungle treks into the mist-shrouded slopes of Rwanda’s Virunga Volcanoes to witness the antics of one of mankind’s closest relatives during an intimate encounter with one of the world’s last habituated populations of mountain gorillas.
Please note: Due to strict governmental regulations on gorilla trekking permits, this extension is only available on request. Please call to inquire about availability.
Full Itinerary
Day 1:Travel to Akagera National Park
The adventure begins at 04:30 AM with a departure from Kigali for an overland journey to Akagera National Park, located along Rwanda’s northeastern border with Tanzania. The drive takes approximately three to four hours, with a stop in Kayonza town for morning coffee and a picnic lunch. Afterward, proceed to the park entrance and begin your search for wildlife, including the big five—elephants, lions, rhinos, buffalos, and leopards—along with numerous herbivores found in the park.
At midday, you will have a picnic lunch before heading to the Giraffe Valley for more wildlife sightings. Later, exit the park through the northern gate and return to Kigali, where you’ll arrive in the early evening. Akagera, one of Africa’s oldest national parks, offers a scenic game reserve of savannah, woodlands, and wetlands, with lakes teeming with crocodiles and hippos. This hidden gem is known for its spectacular scenery and abundant wildlife.

Day 3:Mountain Gorilla Trekking and Travel back to Rwanda
Activity Note: Today’s mountain gorilla trek typically involves two to four hours of walking through thick brush over steep, rugged terrain at elevations ranging from 7,000 to 9,000 feet —and can include exposure to stinging nettles and re ants. As overexposure to humans is harmful to mountain gorillas, contact is limited to one hour—and there is the possibility that they may become agitated and retreat back into the bush in less than our allotted time. Any travellers showing signs of obvious illness may be refused entrance by park authorities.
At about 6:30am, we take a drive of about 30 minutes to the National Park headquarters at to meet your guides for the day. After completing our park formalities, we are embarking on a once in a life time experience of tracking mountain gorillas. Once you spot them you are allowed to spend an hour watching your closest long-lost cousin.
This is perhaps one of the most breath-taking experiences on earth!!! You get so close to these awesome giant primates. You stare at each other blankly not knowing who to break the long silence first. Tracking the gorillas through the light mountain forest on the slopes of the Virunga is a magical experience. These massive primates are extremely rare, with less than 1000 living today. You will get within meters of the family, and be privileged to spend an hour amongst them.
The trekking may be fairly strenuous; up to 3 hours or longer at a relatively high altitude. It is important to bring good hiking boots, long trousers, gloves for protection against stinging nettles, some snacks & sweets (for you, not the gorillas) as well as sufficient water as the rain forest gets hot and humid during the day. You will spend one hour with the gorillas, but it is an hour you will never forget. Depending on the length of our trek, groups will return to our lodge by about 1pm.
In the afternoon, transfer to Rwanda arriving early afternoon and check in to your hotel/Lodge.

Day 4:Golden Monkey Trekking and Transfer back to Kigali
Today’s focus is on golden monkey trekking in the Volcanoes National Park. You will trek through dense bamboo forests and open glades to the habitat of the habituated golden monkeys, who have become accustomed to human presence. The trekking experience allows for up-close observations of the monkeys as they feed on bamboo leaves, leap from tree to tree, and interact with each other. Viewing is limited to one hour, but it provides a memorable experience with these playful creatures.
Afterward, return to your hotel to freshen up, and around 1:00 PM, depart for a 2-hour drive back to Kigali. You will arrive in Kigali by early afternoon, with drop-off at your hotel or Kigali International Airport.

- Visa on Arrival: Some nationalities can obtain visas on arrival, but it's best to apply in advance for convenience.
- Entry Health Requirements: A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for entry into Rwanda and most neighboring countries.
2. Vaccinations and Health Precautions
- Required Vaccinations: In addition to Yellow Fever, it’s recommended to be up-to-date with routine vaccines such as Hepatitis A & B, Typhoid, and Tetanus.

- Footwear: Comfortable hiking boots are essential for trekking, while sandals or casual shoes work well for city exploration.
- Rain Gear: A waterproof jacket and pants are recommended, especially during the rainy season (March-May and October-November).
- Sun Protection: Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. The sun can be intense, particularly at higher elevations.
- Insect Repellent: Essential for protecting against mosquito bites, especially in the evenings.
5. Weather and Best Travel Times
- Rwanda and Uganda: The best time for gorilla trekking is during the dry seasons, from December to February and June to September. Expect cool mornings and evenings, with pleasant daytime temperatures.
- Kenya and Tanzania: The best time for safaris is from June to October, during the dry season, when animals gather around water sources, making wildlife viewing easier.
- Packing for the Seasons: Dry season (June–October) is great for wildlife viewing, while the rainy seasons (March-May, October-November) bring lush landscapes but may make some roads impassable.
6. Currency and Money Matters
- Local Currency: Rwanda uses the Rwandan Franc (RWF), Uganda uses the Ugandan Shilling (UGX), Kenya the Kenyan Shilling (KES), and Tanzania the Tanzanian Shilling (TZS).
- Foreign Currency: U.S. Dollars are widely accepted, especially for larger payments like park fees and accommodations. However, smaller transactions should be made in local currency.
- ATMs and Credit Cards: ATMs are available in major cities, but it’s advisable to carry cash, especially when traveling to rural areas. Credit cards may not be widely accepted outside major hotels.
7. Cultural Etiquette and Customs
- Respecting Local Culture: East African countries are rich in diverse cultures and traditions. Be respectful of local customs, dress modestly when visiting rural areas, and always ask before taking photos of people.
- Language: English is widely spoken in Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania, though Swahili is a common regional language. Learning a few basic phrases in Swahili or Kinyarwanda can enhance your experience.
- SIM Cards and Internet: Local SIM cards are readily available, and most accommodations offer Wi-Fi. Ensure your phone is unlocked before you travel.
- Voltage and Plugs: East African countries use a mix of plug types, including British type G (three-pin) and European type C (two-pin). The voltage is typically 220-240V.
9. Important Notes for Adventure Activities
- Gorilla Trekking Permits: If you're participating in gorilla trekking, permits must be booked in advance due to limited availability. Bring sturdy boots, gloves, and gaiters for trekking through the dense forest.
- Safari Drives: Early morning and late afternoon game drives offer the best chance of spotting wildlife. Bring binoculars and a camera with a good zoom lens for the best experience.
